Computational hardware has been pervasive in almost every field of applied electronics that includes consumer electronics, industrial electronics, and defense electronics predominantly. In order to cater to the varied demands in different application areas, the semiconductor industry, based mostly outside India, has been coming out with multiple product lines. With the Govt. of India’s policy to encourage indigenous development under ‘Make in India’ initiative for reasons besides economics and job creation alone, there is a need to make a big headway in development and manufacture of such computational hardware. The article titled ‘SHAKTI An Open Source Processor Eco System’ describes one such successful effort in this direction.

In the area of wireless data networking, 4G-based deployments are on the rise during the recent years. Ever increasing demand for high-bandwidth and low-latency requirements of some of mobile communication applications has propelled the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards organization to develop standards for the next generation of mobile networks, called 5G wireless network standard that is based on recent advances in wireless communication technologies. The article titled ‘An overview of the 5G mobile network architecture’ presents a high-level overview of the important architectural components of the 5G such as Network Function Virtualization, Radio Access Network (RAN) and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) etc.

Privacy of data has become a very important issue for all firms/ Govt agencies engaged in collecting, processing and disseminating personal information of their customers/citizens and employees alike. The recent enactment of European Union General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) provides a framework to address data protection across 28 EU member states. EU GDPR sets out very clear unambiguous rules on protection of personal data of the EU residents while making it easier for business firms who comply with these rules to transfer data across EU member countries efficiently thus improving their business operations. To enforce data protection outside the bounds of EU, the GDPR has a number of elements related to trans-border data flow across EU member countries and ‘third countries’ that are outside the bounds of EU. The article titled ‘EU GDPR: Privacy matters’ discusses the various legal issues connected with EU GDPR implementation and enforcement.

In the Part 3 of article titled ‘The Essence of Quantum Computing’, the authors conclude that as of today, physical quantum computers exist, and the technologies needed to improve and scale them are advancing rapidly.

Finally, in our continuing series on ‘Experiential Learning of Networking Technologies: Understanding Transport Layer Basics’ the author attempts to clarify certain misconceptions prevalent about TCP and UDP and discusses practical aspects of these two protocols.

As always, wishing our esteemed readers, a happy reading experience with ACC,
